Can r3volution cockpit replace my desk?

Yes, in fact the folks at obutto stopped using desks in 2006 when the first obutto cockpits were made. If you primarily use your desk for using a computer, then our cockpits are a much better solution. We do recommend getting the tabletops though as they provide some desktop space.

What size people fit in your cockpits

We have customers of all different ages & sizes using our cockpits for general computer use/gaming…

  • from age 5 to 75
  • from under 120cm (4′) tall to 203cm (6’8″) tall
  • from 13kg (30lbs) to 181kg (400+lbs)

For flight sim and/or sim-racing use, we recommend the below sizes…

  • minimum height 160cm (5’3″)
  • maximum height 203cm (6’8″)
  • weight does not matter

Please note though, our seat is a sports seat that has bolsters, but our bolsters are flared to accommodate larger folks.  With that said everyone is shaped differently, but with thousands & thousands of obutto’s sold every year, 99% of customers are pleased with the seat.

Is the cockpit strong enough to support larger or heavier guys?

Yes, we use 2.0 to 2.3mm thick walled carbon steel tubing throughout the cockpit, along with a real car sports seat that is mounted with real car seat sliders.  We have many customers that are well over 300lbs & 6’5″ tall.

What do I need to buy to use the cockpit for work, or just game with my keyboard/mouse?

Simple, all you need is our r3volution cockpit, it comes with everything you need to use your computer comfortably. We always recommend the fully articulating tabletops though, as they give you some desk space. Put your keys on there, a tablet, laptop, food, can of snus, whatever. Also, you can rotate them, tilt them, and even mount displays on them 🙂

What do I need to purchase for flight sim use?

For flight sim use, it depends if you fly with a yoke or a stick…….

For Yoke (ie general aviation)

  • all you need is the r3volution cockpit which comes with everything you need to be comfortable using a computer, and the mounts for your yoke & throttle

Stick (ie older aircraft & military sims)

  • r3volution cockpit
  • either our universal flight/stick throttle mount
  • or if you use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, get our A10 flight stick/throttle mount which is specifically shaped and pre-drilled for hard-mounting those controllers
What do I need to purchase if I want to sim-race?

The r3volution cockpit comes with everything you need to be comfortable using a computer, and all the necessary mounts to sim-race!

What VESA bolt patterns does the r3v support?

The r3v monitor stand supports the standard VESA bolt patterns for Monitors, 75x75mm, 100x100mm, or 200x100mm.  If you have a different bolt pattern then you will need to fab or purchase some VESA adapters.  If you purchase, just make sure they are suitable for the aforementioned bolt patterns we use.

How far away is the monitor?

The monitor stand is free standing so you can position it anywhere.  Also, the main monitor mount has a fully articulating arm which provides over 20cm of travel.

What is the max size of monitors for triple monitor setup?

We have customers running triple 32’s, but I would not recommend anything over that if you use our triple monitor mount arms.  Reason being first the weight, second, the arms just are not long enough to give you a 40-45 degree angle on the side monitors, which I’ve found to be ideal.  32’s will give you upto appx 40-45 degree’s but not over that.

If you do want to run  32″ monitors with crazy high angles, or if you want to run much larger monitors/TVs in a triple setup, see below:

  • point your cockpit into a corner of your room
  • attach one monitor to the cockpit’s main monitor stand
  • mount a fully articulating TV/Monitor wall mount on each wall to the right and left of your cockpit (be sure to get your height measurements correct)
  • attach your TVs/Monitors to the wall mounts and adjust the angles
Can the monitor stand hold a 32" monitor?

Yes, as long as your monitor has a 75x75mm, 100x100mm, or 200x100mm VESA bolt pattern it will bolt right up.  If you have a different bolt pattern then you will need to fab or purchase some VESA adapters.  We have some customers running a 50+ inch TV on their r3v cockpits.

Is the new R3V monitor stand compatible with the oZone?

Yes, as it’s a free-standing unit, you can use it with any type of setup.

Can I use a different seat on the cockpit frame?

Yes, any car seat can be used but please note vehicles stock seats run different bolt patterns.  Also, most high end aftermarket seats have their own bolt patterns.  Therefore, if you get a different seat and the bolt pattern differs, all you have to do is fabricate some simple adapter brackets to bolt it down.

  • cut down 2 pieces of 4mm steel bar (do not use stainless) for the appropriate width
  • measure & drill the width bolt holes of the cockpit frame
  • measure & drill the sidth bolt holes of your seat
  • paint matte black
  • bolt your new adapters to the frame
  • bolt your seat/sliders to your new adapters
Can I purchase the cockpit with no seat or with no monitor stand, etc?

Sorry but we only sell our cockpits with everything included as a whole unit.

Can you mount the shifter mount and/or keyboard tray on either side?

Yes, just bolt your mounting posts to either side and slot in your mounts.

Is the steering wheel mount adjustable

The r3v has a main mount that can be used for steering wheels, and it is height adjustable and distance adjustable along a shallow angle.  The main mount is also tilt adjustable and pre-drilled for all the commonly used steering wheels, along with being pre-drilled for smaller displays with 75x75mm and 100x100mm bolt patterns.

Which steering wheels fit on the r3volution?

If a steering can clamp to a desk then it can clamp to the r3v’s main mount.  The main mount comes pre-drilled for hard mounting the below steering wheels:

  • Logitech G25/27
  • Thrustmaster T500 RS
  • Fanatec 911 & CSR

Furthermore, we have many customers running the ECCI 6000 & 7000 wheels on their r3volution cockpits.

What shifters fit on your shifter mount?

Any shifter that can clamp to a desk can clamp to our shifter mount 🙂  Therefore, Fanatec shifters need some modifying.

How can I raise the seat

If you are not so tall, and sim race or fly in your cockpit, and find the main mount a tad too high it’s easy to raise your seat.

  • Figure out how much higher you want your seat
  • Get something to act as a spacer at that height (ie metal spacers, wood, whatever)
  • Get some longer bolts that accommodate the spacers
  • Bolt in your spacer between your seat sliders and the frame rails.
Why did you remove the monitor stand knobs?

The knobs, which were carried over from the oZone cockpit design, were found to make the r3v free-standing monitor less stable.  This was observed over a 9 month period of daily use for all work & gaming, and on hard floors to carpeted floors.  The reason they are needed on the oZone is due to the shorter mounting posts and due to the fact that the monitor stand is attached to the cockpit.

*NOTE* when setting up your cockpit, make sure you pull your monitor stands leg’s apart from one another as this stabilizes the stand.  Furthermore, if you have thick carpet padding then we recommend using an exercise mat under your cockpit.  This firms up the surface and looks great too!

What age/size people fit in your cockpits

For Yoke (ie general aviation)

  • all you need is the oZone cockpit which comes with everything you need to be comfortable using a computer, and the mounts for your yoke & throttle

Stick (ie older aircraft & military sims)

  • 1ea oZone cockpit
  • either 1ea Universal flight/stick throttle mount
  • or if you use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, 1ea A10 flight stick/throttle mount which is specifically shaped and pre-drilled for hard-mounting those controllers
What do I need to purchase so I can sim-race?

The r3volution cockpit comes with everything you need to be comfortable using a computer, and all the necessary mounts to sim-race!

Is the keyboard/mouse tray really useful for everyday computer use and/or gaming?

Yes, the oZone cockpit was designed to use a computer!  The keyboard/mouse tray is covered in a mousepad material, and is made of very thick steel.  It’s very stable, and can be positioned in an ergonomic position in relation to rest of your body.

In fact, everyone here at obutto stopped using desks in 2006, and we do all our work in our cockpits 🙂and plenty of gaming too muahahahah!

Can you mount the shifter mount and/or keyboard tray on either side?

Yes, just bolt your mounting posts to either side and slot in your mounts.

Is the cockpit strong enough to support larger or heavier guys?

Yes, we use 2.0 to 2.3mm thick walled carbon steel tubing throughout the cockpit, along with a real car sports seat that is mounted with real car seat sliders.  We have many customers that are over 300lbs & 6’5″ tall.

Why are the shipping costs so high?

Since we use a real car sports seat, and a very robust frame design with only bends & welds (ie no weak joints), our box is very large and the volume weight is very heavy which incurs “oversize fees”.  If you have ever shipped a car seat to someone you will understand.

Package Dimensions:

oZone cockpit = 1020mm x 615mm x 570mm  Weight= 50kg

oZone triple mount = 680mm x 230mm x 140mm  Weight= 7kg

oZone tabletop = 1030mm x 420mm x 30mm  Weight= 6kg

Universal flight stick/throttle mount = 330mm x 325mm x 195mm  Weight= 4kg

How far away is the monitor?

The monitor stand on the oZone is attached to the cockpit, therefore it is in a fixed location.  The location of your attached monitor will be 7cm behind the main mount (or steering wheel/yoke mount).

I am 188cm (6’2″) tall and when racing in a proper race driving position, my eyes are only 63.5cm (25″) from my middle monitor.

Are the new VESA monitor mounts compatible with the older generation oZone's?

If you have an oZone sold around the world from mid 2007-2009, yes you can slot in the oZone VESA monitor mount, please contact your nearest distributor to purchase.

If you have one of the first 50 cockpits we sold in USA around Dec 2006 to Jan2007, which were sold for much less due to some powder coating issues, the oZone VESA monitor mount will not fit right out of the box.  You will need to grind down the VESA mounts vertical posts by 1mm, as the inner diameter of your mounting posts is smaller.  If you have any questions please contact us at info@obutto.com

Can the monitor stand hold a 32" monitor or larger?

Yes, the oZone monitor stand is very stout so weight is not an issue.   Also, it comes pre-drilled with standard VESA bolt patterns:  75x75mm, 100x100mm, and 200x100mm.  As long as your monitor has these standard VESA bolt patterns you can attach your monitor right out of the box.

If you have a larger bolt pattern, as do some 32″ monitors but mostly 32″  or larger TV’s, then all you need to do is fabricate or purchase a VESA adapter.

Please note, while we have many oZone customers around the world using 32″ to 47″ TV’s on their oZone’s, I personally find it far too distracting.  Try sitting with your eyes only 63cm (25″) from your 47″ TV and you’ll know what I mean.  Furthermore, due to the monitors position above the main mounts tubing, you can have clearance issues at the bottom of such large TV’s.  Therefore, we recommend nothing larger than a 32″ monitor.

What is the largest monitors I can fit on the triple mounts?

The oZone triple mounts are made for and tested up to 24 inch monitors, as this is the largest size monitor I recommend for the oZone….anything larger is just too distracting.  With that said, we have customers that run triple 27’s but the triple mount arms are barely long enough to accommodate this size.

One thing to note, the oZone triple mount arms are not articulating, they are a fixed angle and the amount of angle depends on the size of your monitors.  The larger the monitors, the less angle for your side monitors.  In a triple 22″ setup the side monitors are angled at around 45 deg, and in a triple 24″ setup it’s more like 40 deg.

As with the main monitor mount, the triple mounting arms come pre-drilled for the standard VESA bolt patterns:  75x75mm, 100x100mm, 200x100mm

Is the steering wheel mount adjustable?

Yes, the oZone main mount is height & distance adjustable at an angle.  Our cockpits standout above the rest as they allow the user to achieve a proper race driving position.

Which steering wheels fit the oZone?

If a steering can clamp to a desk then it can clamp to the r3v’s main mount.  The main mount is optimized for using the Logitech G25/G27, which has small clip-on spacers, by having a small lip for the spacers grip.  If you don’t run a G25/27 then you just need to use a small block of wood, can of snus, deck of cards, whatever to act as a spacer.  Our oZone customers worldwide have been using the below controllers on their oZone cockpits:

  • Logitech G25/27
  • Thrustmaster T500 RS
  • ECCI 6000 & 7000
  • Fanatec 911 & CSR
Is it easy to switch between sims & shooters, or just general computer use?

Since both our cockpits were specifically designed to use a computer and peripherals, Yes!  All of our mounts can easily be slotted out in seconds to either swap for other mounts, or just to get things out of the way.  Furthermore, each mount swivels out of the way in seconds, so take your pick.

Please check out a quick video that shows the oZone in action playing some racing sims and switching to a shooter…. oZone in action!
